Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder Make sure it's fresh
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk Preferably cold
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter Melted

Equipment

  • 1 8x8-inch baking dish Glass or ceramic preferred.
  • 1 Mixing Bowl

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Pour the melted butter into an 8x8 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Pour the cold buttermilk into the dry ingredients. Use a spatula to stir until the ingredients are just combined. Do not overmix; the dough will be slightly lumpy and sticky.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Cut the dough into 9 equal squares.
  5. Place each biscuit square into the baking dish, arranging them in a single layer on top of the melted butter.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through. Serve warm.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough for the most tender and fluffy biscuits.
Make sure your baking powder is fresh for the best rise.
For a savory twist, add 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 1 tsp of garlic powder to the dry ingredients.
