Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion finely diced
  • 1 medium Green Bell Pepper finely diced
  • 1 lb Ground Beef 85/15 recommended
  • 1 cup Ketchup (240ml)
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar (30g), packed
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce (15ml)
  • 1 tsp Yellow Mustard (5ml)
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 large Loaf French Bread
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted Butter (113g), softened
  • 2 cloves Garlic finely minced
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (112g)
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese (112g)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (8g), chopped

Equipment

  • 1 Large Skillet
  • 1 Baking sheet

Instructions

Create the Rich and Savory Beef Filling
  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and bell pepper and sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft and translucent.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet, break it apart, and cook until no pink remains. Drain excess grease.
  3. Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook for 10 minutes to thicken.
Prepare the Ultimate Garlic Bread Base
  1. Preheat your oven's broiler to high and position a rack 6 inches from the heat.
  2. Slice the French bread in half lengthwise and place on a baking sheet. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter and minced garlic, then spread evenly over the bread.
Assemble and Broil
  1. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture over the garlic bread. Sprinkle evenly with the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses.
  2. Place under the broiler for 2-4 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly blistered.
Garnish and Serve
  1. Remove from the oven, let rest for a minute, then garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Slice and serve immediately.

Notes

For the best melt, shred your own cheese from a block.
Do not walk away from the oven while broiling; the cheese can burn in seconds.
Letting the sloppy joe sauce simmer and thicken is key to preventing soggy bread.
